Place-based branding and digital design for Gateshead’s Railway Quarter.
About
The Gateshead Railway Quarter is an emerging cultural district, home to independent businesses, creative spaces, food and drink venues, and a growing programme of events.
Beatnik Studio was commissioned to create a bold digital presence and visual identity that would capture the area's industrial heritage, independent spirit and evolving creative scene — positioning the Railway Quarter as one of the North East's most exciting destinations.
The Challenge
The Railway Quarter is a diverse and evolving neighbourhood without a single flagship destination. Its strength lies in the collective identity of its independent businesses, creative organisations and distinctive character.
The challenge was to create a recognisable place brand that could unite diverse venues under a single identity, promote businesses, attractions and events, encourage exploration and repeat visits, and provide a flexible digital platform capable of growing alongside the district.
Branding
We began by exploring the area's industrial heritage and railway architecture. The visual identity draws inspiration from railway arches and viaducts, industrial typography, historic masonry and signage, and the character of independent urban neighbourhoods.
The identity system centres around a simplified arch motif inspired by the area's railway infrastructure. Combined with expressive photography and condensed typography, the brand strikes a balance between heritage and contemporary culture, with a restrained colour palette that allows local stories and photography to take centre stage.
The identity is designed to work across website and digital experiences, social media, signage, print collateral, wayfinding and event promotion.
Website Design
The website was designed to feel immersive and editorial rather than directory-led. Large imagery, curated trails and clear visitor pathways encourage users to explore the district naturally.

Outcome
The finished website provides Gateshead Railway Quarter with a distinctive digital home and a flexible platform for future growth.
By combining branding, storytelling and visitor-focused design, the project helps position the Railway Quarter as one of the North East's most exciting destinations for culture, creativity and independent business.
